Depois de ler um livro cheio de alegorias bonitas, saltar para o meio de uma guerra foi um balde de água fria. Mas refrescar também sabe bem. Gostei muito deste livro. Gostei da honestidade do delírio, do caminho percorrido pelo personagem, das suas dúvidas e reflexões marcadas pelo horror sofrido, das viagens ao passado, às histórias contadas. E gostei do fim completamente inesperado. Não é um livro bonito, mas é uma experiência de leitura que vale a pena.

Bonne nouvelle! On June 2, David Diop became the first French winner of the International Booker Prize for his novel At Night All Blood is Black. The French-Senegalese author shared the 50,000 pound prize with Anna Moschovakis, who translated his work, which was published by Le Seuil. The novel was a hit in France and won Le Prix Goncourt des Lycéens in 2018, a prize voted on by high school students.
Frère d’âme, the original title, can’t be literally translated. The meaning—a soul brother/mate—is in French very close to the word “arme,” which means weapon. The choice of At Night All Blood is Black as the English title clearly expresses all the beauty and violence of this short book.

Powerfull read. Very true were all the praises about this book. I get precisely what I’d expected, even more, as those few recollections of his, far too short, pre-war life, are especially haunting.
Just great.

3.5 stars. Overall, I enjoyed the story. Strange and brutal at times, but I liked it. Read like a poem, due to the repetition of descriptions and emotive language.

An absolutely brutal tale from World War I, narrated by a Senegalese tirailleur who is dehumanised by the things he sees and experiences.
