This was one of those books that I really had to push through so I’m grateful it was a collection of short stories so that I could take a break in between each one. I suppose my overall main issue is that when I pick up a book, I intend to use it as a method to escape real life, which is typically why I stick to fantasy or historical fiction, but this is realistic fiction set in the South in semi modern time so this book didn’t only fail to act as an escape but more so acted as a rambling reminder of some of the most horrible things in life that happen right at home or the next street over or the small towns you pass driving down the highway. The last two in the book were the only ones that I enjoyed, Quiet Haven & Funny Boy, possibly because even though they both were depressing in terms of topic, the writing and interactions between characters were not.

Not at all what I expected from John Grisham. This is a collection of poorly written, plotless, short stories. Aside from being pointless and boring the stories are also crude and full of profanity! After struggling through the first 250 pages, I finally gave up all hope that anything even remotely interesting was going to happen. (It's a 300 page book) What a waste of time!

Not my favorite book. Most of the stories seemed a little too ridiculous but I did like the last story.

Another in the tradition of "decent, not earth-shattering" Grisham novels. I continue to be irked by the way he writes women. Of these stories my favorite was "Quiet Haven". I will say, he knows from nursing homes.

This book was fun! It makes me happy to not live in a small town in the south :)

As this is a collection of short stories, I will give each story a 1 to 5 star rating and then average the ratings for the total book rating.

1. Blood Drive - 4

2. Fetching Raymond - 4

3. Fish Files - 1

I am not a fan of short stories or of John Grisham, but this one was somewhere between okay and I liked it. I have read much worse, but I wouldn't necessarily pick this one up.
