After [b:Shameless|30124886|Shameless (Playboys in Love, #1)|Gina L. Maxwell|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1462811438l/30124886._SX50_.jpg|50552559] was so freaking good, I was looking forward to seeing what would come next in the series. Unfortunately, I found it kind of disappointing.

Roman "Ruthless" Reeves (Seriously, that is the worst stripper name ever. Why couldn't he have just been a ruthless guy with a name that sounds sexy instead?) is a lawyer who works part time as a stripper with Chase from book 1. Addison Paige is also a lawyer and is best friends with Jane. If you read book 1, she's the one that sent Chase to Jane's apartment.

At a night out with Chase and Jane, Roman and Addison meet for the first time and hook up, but both agree that it will be one and done. Until a few weeks later, Roman is surprised to find that Addison was a new hire brought on by his partner. At first, they agree to keep things professional, but eventually they start bonking everywhere.

On the positive side, this was smut with a plot, which I appreciate, but there are a few things that really didn't work for me.

First of all, it made absolutely no sense that a high-powered attorney that had just opened his own practice would have the time to also work as a stripper. It worked as a part time gig for Chase in book 1, and may have worked here if Roman was paying his way through law school or something, but with the actual way things were, it just seemed strange and unnecessary.

Second, the menage didn't really make sense and also just seemed thrown in there as another "sexy" attribute for Roman, like being a stripper. One of the reasons I wasn't a fan of it here was that Addison didn't really want to be in a threesome. She is clear that she only engages in it because Roman says he wants it, and she often second guesses it or expresses guilt afterwards. Added to that, I don't even understand why Roman wanted the threesomes. He gets angry at Austin in his internal monologue and has to fight with himself to allow Austin to do things to Addison during their hookups. If he doesn't want some other dude touching his lady, why the F--- does he keep asking him to come over?

And this leads to the final reason why the menage did not work for me in this one. The theme of the series seems to be kinks, and Roman's "kink" is that he likes sharing his woman. Except that he doesn't actually like it. He admits near the end that he engaged in menages because it keeps him separated from the women emotionally, so it's not actually his kink, it's an avoidance strategy.

I don't know. I just wasn't feeling it.

Hopefully the third book will work better for me.

While a bit more fleshed out than Shameless, I felt this book suffered from similar challenges. Addison and Roman did at least share some of their respective backstory with each other. But it felt more like a way to make the conflict work than to develop the characters. And while their romance did actually seem to develop since they spent time together outside of bedroom activities, it didn't really gel either.

I think the biggest issue for me in this book was that there is way too much tell. The author seems to have the characters break the 4th wall a lot to seemingly talk directly to the reader about their thoughts and the action instead of just having the action to happen. At times, it felt like I was reading Addison or Roman's diary than watching the story unfold.

Also, I just never liked Addison. The whole honey badger thing just didn't work for me. She felt too shrewish for me to really root for. Some of that is the female narrator's voice, which I didn't really care for. And a couple of times I thought Addison was really dense despite the story setting her up to be smart and competent. But I did love Roman. Hot, yet flawed, alpha bad boy that he is.
