I always thought this was a standalone. I realized in the the last 10 percent of the book that there must be another one. And the relief I felt when I saw that the next one is already published is pretty telling of how much I liked this book.
In the beginning I was like ‘oh that’s cute, a grumpy sunshine office romance in a fantasy setting’. And it turned out to be so much more than just that. I love the characters in this book! Iris and Romans love story feels so pure and perfectly romantic. I loved the idea of their typewriters being connected and I loved their letters (side note: I also realized how much confidence Rebecca Ross must have in her own writing as she made her characters constantly praise each others writing. it was worth the praise).
I really loved the world building and the plot. I feel like we got to learn about their world and they still had time to fall in love. The found family is also lovely, I absolutely hope Marisol, Keegan and Attie will all make their return in the second book.
I did NOT see the plot twist comingI almost forgot about Forest when he suddenly showed up and I did not expect to not like him. But I was so angry that he wouldn’t take both Roman and Iris. I think there was enough time to save both of them. I just really hope that I’ll like how the story progresses because it’s been so good until now.
Oh another thing I would like to add - this is not at all like Acotar or fourth wing so I don’t understand why booktok advertises it like that. That was the reason I read it in the first place. But nothing can top acotar so I guess it was good that it’s so different from it :)

This is an interesting book. I found the language a tad bit flowery for me, but it wasn't too bad. And the content and overall writing style I enjoyed.
Definitely check out the trigger warnings, just in case. This was emotionally rough at times. The romance was cute, and there was technically a sex scene, but it was not explicit. Most people would consider this a sweet romance, but the overall themes and such mean it's no cutesy romance book.

This is most certainly a Romantasy- heavy on the romance aspect. I didn’t really know where this book would go- it’s so unique. And I was pleasantly surprised, as I hung on, along for the ride. I loved how the characters unfolded. There was a spot here and there where I called what would happen like when the B&B was getting robbed and it ended up being Forest The beginning was slow, but the second half of the book made it worth it. I really wish we had more scenes/time with Attie. I genuinely enjoyed this story, but it didn’t blow me away- which is why I gave it 4 stars instead of 5.

I winded up falling in love with this book, but it was a slow burn. The banter and the story line really kicked in and improved to just cost into a quick burning love that was evident from the first quirk. I am immediately starting the second because I need to know what is happening. That cliff was deep at the end and now I have more questions than answers! I'm very sad I put off reading this one for so sooo long!

Although this book does have a secret identity trope and a fair amount of mutual pining for each other the pace doesn't make it seem excessively drawn out, like it does in other YA novels. The characters are likeable and the magical typewriters were my favorite part. I want to know more about the grandparents and their friendship and backstory. I also think the addition of the dieties and lore was a little much because we don't get a resolution at the end but maybe it will all come together in the sequel.
