My heart was so happy the last chapters of this book.

A sweet story but a bit bland
It was a good story but similar to many others. The characters were well written but the author stayed away from anything too "deep". It was a good description of how love can grow between a child and adult who is not their parent but it stayed mostly away from the uglier aspects of slavery.

This story takes place in the years before the Civil War. It tells of Mattie, a young woman who is wetnurse for the Wainwright family.
The baby she's given charge of is Elizabeth, who Mattie calls Lisbeth. Mattie teaches Lisbeth many things, the love of music, black-eyed peas, and the first yellow crocuses of the spring.
As Lisbeth grows up, she begins to realize that slavery is wrong, and a brutal act that she witnesses makes it even worse.

I don't *love* when white people write in Black dialects, particularly from times of slavery, but overall a great story.

This book was fine, but it also felt like a less-skillful version of "The Invention of Wings" (which is far better).

This book was unexpectedly good with some very historical facts contained through the characters. I really enjoyed every page, and wanted to know more about the characters with every page.
