This book was absolutely incredible to read. The story was really engaging and kept me longing to read more. Parts of the book pushed me to tears, other parts gave me butterflies. I feel sad that the book is over, but I'm grateful to hear there are more books following the story. I would 100% recommend this book to anyone with an interest in black history.

It's heartbreaking that the things in this book were the reality of so many people at the time, the way they were treated, spoken to and thought of is dispicable.

For such a short book this spans many years, but given the shortness there are a lot of jumps in time and a lot of glossing over events. It could have been improved by a bit of fleshing out.

The narration for this was excellent, with Bahni Turpin nailing the southern accents.

I cannot remember the last time I read a book nearly straight through. I liked how this story came at the horrors of slavery through such a different angle. It was foremost about this complicated relationship that was so loving, even through the truth of the institutional racism behind it. I was saddened by the predictable ending that could be seen very early.  Otherwise, an excellent read.
