Seriously this may be the best book of American poetry published during my life time.

Absolutely unbelievable in terms of scope, content, language, focus, fun, and everything else that makes a book of poems memorable and worth reading--the heft of this book should encourage readers--it is massive and reads like it.

Lots of diversity in language and structure, which felt refreshing in today's poetry world.

Lots of sweeping content--great travel writing, great relationship stuff, great political stuff, great personal stuff, awesome observational stuff--this book honestly has it all.

Strongly recommended for everyone with even a passing interest in poetry.

Was going to be 3.75 but something about the last section really got to me. There are some amazing poems in here, although it feels a bit cobbled together as a collection. There is a lot of very cool word play which I really appreciate.

coming back to this to document some of my favorite quotes:

"you make me so happy / how can i write it down"

"you don't have to give yourself to everyone you want / just like every impulse need not to be surrendered to"

"everything / everything / overtakes me eventually"

"i don't care if you think i don't know what I'm saying / i know what I'm saying"

"everything disgusting about love is an infection i have experienced personally / everything glorious about love also belongs to me"

"i missed something so hard it made me sad in a final way"

"truth... / i have stretched that word so far"

"but i left something soft / of myself in that room / i won't make the mistake / of bringing into the next one"

"the pain of similarity in the sweetness"
