A big, sweeping and dramatic story of a cattle drive from Texas to Montana. As much as this is about cowboys and Texas Rangers, I would say that this book is really about relationships. I read this as part of a year-long read along. It is not my typical book but I am glad I read it.

“If you only come face-to-face with your own mistakes once or twice in your life it’s bound to be extra painful. I face mine every day - that way they ain’t usually much worse than a dry shave”

I read this book because it is frequently cited as a most favourite book, and it is a Pulitzer winner. It took a long time to complete the 37-hour audio version, as it had to be returned to the library, and there was a waitlist before I could borrow it again. I am not really a fan of Westerns, and this epic novel, while beautifully written, didn’t convert me. The portrayal of indigenous peoples in this saga was jarring to read in 2024.  Women have 2 notes - whore or heroine. However, the characters and their relationships were well written, and there is much humour amidst the brutality.
