Mayyybe 2.5 stars? This book was just weird. The premise was interesting, but the writing style was super strange (possibly because of the translation) and I just couldn’t get used to it. I thought the romance was pretty creepy (he’s 20 and she’s 16.... he’s too old for you girl), and the end was wrapped up super quickly. Not to mention the fact that it made zero sense. I don’t know. This book just didn’t work for me.

Slow to start, then very intriguing with a very cool overarching theme!

I wanted to love this book, the cover lured me in.. it’s beautiful. The story, unfortunately, didn’t lure me in. I kept hoping the book would get better, I got about 1/2 way through & had to DNF it. Not sure if something was lost in translation, but the main character was so childish.. yes I know she was 16… but I would have guessed 13 if the book didn’t mention her age. Disappointed.

I had so much hope for this book. A retelling of Pride and Prejudice had me hooked! A book that makes what’s written in it come to life? Awesome! But the story dragged and I just couldn’t get into it. I had to force myself to finish it. The premise was cool but something about it just didn’t jive with me.

So this was a mashup of Emma and Pride & Prejudice set in a contemporary boarding school setting. I think that I enjoyed the original elements of this story more than the imported Jane Austen elements. The haunted castle and the cursed book and the fairy tales were all fun. I did get a little frustrated with Emma because there were a few duh moments. But overall it was entertaining.

This was an an excellent book; only thing I would change would be to include less language. (There isn’t a ton, but it is present.) Because it was translated from German, a few of the sentences are structured somewhat oddly, but nothing too noticeable or cringe-worthy. Definitely would recommend.
Minor: Cursing
