Really good introduction to this series. I enjoyed the Victorianism as well as the criminal elements. The characters seem real and it actually is a page turner that keeps you going. I found the evil and the darkness to be not over done, nor campy. I'll look forward to reading more.

A fast, entertaining story. I’m a bit annoyed with myself that I read the third one first, even if by accident!

The novel about the early days of Scotland Yard has too much going on in it, and some of the events seem unlikely. It is about several concurrent cases, the biggest of which is the murder of one of the police inspectors.

I really enjoyed the book. The storyline was great and kept me intrigued. I found parts of it slower than I thought it should be at times, which made it a longer read than I had anticipated. Overall, though, I really enjoyed the story. I'm not sure what else I wanted from the book or the ending, but it definitely left me wanting a bit more. Wish I could put my finger on exactly what felt off, but again, overall, it was a decent read.

Wow, what a gripping mystery! This story is set at the inception of the Scotland Yard as a detective agency. Murder, kidnapping, intrigue...this book has it all, as well as basic forensics. The characters are interesting and unique and I could definitely see this as a series.

Honestly I never thought I’d actually get round to reading this book but I’ve conquered it and I do not regret it one bit. It’s such a good book with such and great storyline that can be a little confusing at times but clarifies as you keep reading. Would recommend.
