It’s difficult to talk about this book. It sat on my shelf for a year before I finally picked it up, and I’m kicking myself I didn’t read it sooner.

This is a book about human beings: sad, messy, anxious, chaotic human beings who are trying to do the best they can. This is about how sometimes we never know our impact on each other, and how much we need each other.

The plot synopsis really doesn’t do this book justice. Because it’s not really about a bank robber/hostage situation, even though that’s what’s happening in the book. This story is about something deeper. All I can say is that it touched me. It touched the parts of me that I’d forgotten we’re still aching to be understood.

Perhaps more than any other author, I trust Fredrik Backman to play with my emotions in the most profound, moving, heartbreaking, wonderful way. Without fail, I fall in love with his characters from the first ten pages, and I rush to keep turning the pages to stay immersed in their world.

Anxious People is rife with sarcasm and fourth-wall breaking, a characteristic Backman style that makes me laugh as often as it makes me cry.
This is a story about a bank robbery or a hostage crisis or the love between a father and son or trauma or idiocy or grief or falling in love or a simple Swedish bridge. In reality, it is a story about all of the above and more, beginning with a nameless bank robber who didn't intend to be a bank robber and certainly didn't intend to crash an apartment viewing and hold eight people hostage. As the narrative goes on, Backman intersperses memories from ten years ago, inhabiting the perspectives of the bank robber, the hostages, and the father-and-son police team investigating the case, and it's just clean and meaningful and beautiful.

I don't know how to write a review for this.

As someone who has dealt with suicide and friends and family who have danced the fine line, it was a very emotional read. There definitely should be a trigger warning as parts were tough to power through.

But it gets five stars for the amount of humanity that has been woven and packed in this story. And how much encouragement Backman has given his readers that we are not alone. That there's no shame in making mistakes and being human and not knowing how life is supposed to go.

This book met me in a season of change and shifting and has acted somewhat as a healing process for me. This was an emotional ride, but wow am I thankful for it.
