I disliked this book so much I couldn't actually finish it. Extremely, excruciatingly painful. Got halfway before I gave up.

I can’t finish :( I can see the potential but really can’t get on board with the writing style

Beautiful. Funny. Clever. Heartwarming. Comforting. Compassionate. Absolutely loved it, Fredrick Backman’s writing is stunning and captures so much of what it is to be human. I was close to tears by the last page. Love a happy ending.

In case y'all forgot, [b:A Man Called Ove|18774964|A Man Called Ove|Fredrik Backman|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1405259930l/18774964._SY75_.jpg|21619954] is one of my favorite books EVER, so I was really excited when this one came available for me at the library. And I really, really enjoyed it! No, it wasn't as good as Ove, but it was still really enjoyable. I laughed and cried, which admittedly, yes, is a normal day for a woman who is almost 9 months pregnant. But still, I find it notable when a book can evoke a wide range of emotions from me. It also had a little mystery going alongside all the sentimentality, which I thought was a nice touch.
This story, like all of Backman's, is a bit unorthodox. Yes, it is about a bank robbery that regrettably turns into a hostage situation (even criminals have bad days), but it is about so much more than that. There is a quote in the book where the author tells us it is a story about idiots, but let's be honest... we can all be idiots from time to time. So really, this is a story about people. Their loves, their losses, their mistakes, and their triumphs. The beginning and the end. And maybe it is due to my current situation, but a lot of it seemed to be about parenting. Having kids, and what that means, and how we can screw up but they love us anyway, so long as we are trying.
One thing I appreciate about Backman's books: they have happy, but still realistic, endings. But I do want to point out that just like Ove, there is a trigger warning for. And it isn't in passing; the entirety of the story revolves around the idea (just like Ove). That being said, he writes the subject with so much understanding and empathy that I think anyone struggling would find joy and comfort from his words. I know I did.
"But when you get home this evening, when this day is over and the night takes us, allow yourself a deep breath. Because we made it through this day as well. There'll be another one along tomorrow."
