First in a new series by Kenyon and it was definitely an interesting delve into a new world. Tanis is a dragon and when her brother ends up murdered she wants revenge but only against the man who killed him. She kidnaps a unicorn and forces him to use his magic to change her into a human for this purpose. Dash agrees and when the two begin to head towards the same destination, Dash realizes his sister’s death might be connected to the dragon. Dash isn’t just any unicorn, but the king of the realms and when uprisings begin, Tanis has to choose a side.

Reasons I Recommend:

1) Kenyon is good at creating new worlds

2) The madness of a unicorn and a dragon falling in love is such an interesting idea; these powers they can still access in human form and

3) A new world full of elves and centaurs and zombies. A promising new series.

I will always recommend Sherrilyn Kenyon as your gateway drug to Romantasy lol. Her writing is on point (no awkward sentences here) and there is just enough spice for you to dip your foot in the water.

While I did enjoy learning about this new world of the Thirteen Kingdoms, I think her other series like The Dark Hunter and The League are better.

Our unicorn MMC was definitely not full of glitter and rainbow. Instead, our sunshine came in the form of a dragon turned human FMC. The fight scenes were great and I wish there were more of them (especially with the switching between unicorn and human forms during combat).

What bothered me was the BIG cast of characters in the book (reason why I docked it down to 3.5 stars). It felt like the author tried to introduce everyone and their moms in this book even though they only showed up for literally a sentence (like did we need to know about The Outlaws when they barely did anything?). This made it confusing to follow. We could have concentrated more on a smaller cast of characters as opposed of rushing the meat of the storyline a tad bit in order to introduce the many characters. Perhaps we could learn more about our unicorn high king or the past trauma that haunted our dragon. In the author's other book, only 1 or 2 side characters were introduced in each book, slowly opening you up to the people that live in that world as you moved through the series.

Overall, it was a good story. The pacing felt rushed at the end since we spent so much time touching on the many minor characters that may become important in future books but did very little in this one.

I’m convinced she wrote this book as a joke but I enjoyed it nonetheless.
