I’m sorry - but I was bored. It was a slog to get through. I can appreciate it for what it is for the time is written - and of course gotta love sapphic vampires. My favorite part of the book wasn’t even the words but the artwork that was included in this version - the art was beautiful.

After reading The Blood of the Vampire, I was on the hunt for another Victorian horror centred around vampires, and this was exactly that. Now that I’ve read a handful of classic novels, I feel the passion for analyzing and interpreting the content and how it was informed by the period. Will be doing a deep dive soon. I also have Dracula, but I’m scared because it’s 500 pages…
Moderate: Child death
Super quick read (if you are okay with the flowery gothic language). Obviously everything in Carmilla has been done many times over in modern stories, but this was the first one, and as such, this absolutely slaps.
This girl is down bad for the hot classiest vamp who keeps feeling her up on the sly after pops invited her to stay. Yes, there's a lot going on with the predatory lesbian trope and the dreams since girlypop was 6 years old, but ignore that and you've got a pretty great "women"s wrongs" vamp story.
I started with the classic version, and will be reading the Machado version next. Have already watched and loved the Carmilla web series!
