So much fun! The Hales do a terrific job of capturing the comic book character - especially her most recent iteration - in prose for the tween-aged audience.

*before reading take note that I do not edit my reviews though the evidence is evident of your new finding.

For about the past six days I’ve been reading a book a book that took me out of my two month long reading slump to what do I owe this pleasure. (I literally just wanted to say that...) Shannon Hale is an author I can trust will get me an awesome book and will always be there to get me out of a slump even though this is a superhero marvel thing- I’ve clearly never watched a marvel movie...
I throughly enjoyed it while I kinda lost interest in the 'fight' scenes and was a heck of a lot confused the book in and of its self was one worth reading. And yes even though I figured the villain out before half of the book it was a great book.

Here is where I leave you to decide whether you will decide to go forth on this journey or resisit and never read the glory that is this book.

And the best review goes to.............

This was really fun, and I'm glad it exists, especially for kids who might be turned off by graphic novels but are interested in the character of Squirrel Girl. Or just squirrels. IDK.

There is a lot of Marvel Universe injokey stuff (Doreen's texts to all the other Avengers) but I think it mostly would still be funny on some level even to kids who aren't as familiar.

I also loved that Doreen's friend is a hearing impaired Latina girl!

I will say that for me, personally, I didn't like it as much as I like Ryan North's comics (the humor is a little more silly and a little less...whatever Ryan North is), but, also, this book isn't really for me, and I think this will be a lot of fun for a lot of middle-grade readers.

I debated between 3 & 4 stars for this but I'm rounding up to 4 mainly for Tony Stark's text messages and Doreen's footnotes.

I don't even know where to start. I love the current run of the Squirrel Girl by North and Henderson, and I knew I had to pick this up. Ana SofΓa was an incredible best friend for Doreen, their friendship was everything, as was Doreen and Tippy Toe's. There were so many great quotes and one liners.

"I'm here to kick butts and eat nuts. And I'm ALL OUT OF NUTS'"

At its core, it is a book about a girl trying to figure out who she is and finding out how strong she really is. I wish I had had this book growing up.

"You are Doreen Green, age fourteen, over five feet tall and not an inch mean. You are also Squirrel Girl - Super Hero, with both powers of squirrel and powers of girl. And you are my friend."

I adored this book 10,000 times more than I thought I would and absolutely DIED LAUGHING at her texts with the Winter Soldier and Tony Stark (which of course I read to Ryan, who adores Bucky). I didn't get into the comics much (mostly because I'm just not a fan of superhero style comics) but am glad to have experienced SG in novel form. Shannon Hale may be the perfect choice to have written it.

Outstanding! It took me a few chapters to find the rhythm to the story, but once things started to click together I was hooked. The characters are fantastic! The villain pieces reminded me of the series NERDS by Michael Buckley, which our whole family loved. This has a similar feel which was great. My favorite part were the text exchanges between Squirrel Girl and other Marvel heroes. This is smart, funny, and entertaining. Highly recommend! I'm off to buy book 2 because I can't wait to see what's next.

So. Much. Fun.

My only criticism is that many characters were first introduced and described with their color or race as a main distinguishing characteristic. It was unnecessary (especially in reinforcing at least three minor characters as white - picture them however you want, kids!) and rather jarring to me as a reader.

I did read an uncorrected advance proof, so hopefully some of that was caught and changed in final editing.
