this is the first stephen king novel i've read, somehow! i have never been much of a horror person, that is, until this year. reading dracula in parallel i gotta respect the epistolary / fragmented format. fast-paced and page-turning read. loved the references to macbeth.

I’ve already seen the movie and I just wanted to read something else
Quick edit as I’ve reread Carrie again in 2023 after 6 years :
I still love this book and a lot resonates within me regarding Carrie. I was bullied as a teen and some of the bullying in this book sets my teeth on edge. As it was written in the 70s and I’m older now and was reading this in order to listen along with the Derry public radio podcast but I did seem to notice more racism, sexism and prejudice reading from a different perspective. I still love this novel and I think Carrie is bad ass (don’t judge me lol) and I applaud her as our anti-hero. Yes King writes from a child’s perspective quite adeptly, but I didn’t find him overly sympathetic ah all towards Carrie’s character.
Stephen King's ability to write from the teenage female perspective is uncanny. The thoughts, feelings, emotions etc that he is able to convey is astounding.
I love this book. I love vintage King. Carrie is a true horror classic and I suggest it to anyone who loves King, anyone who has ever bullied or been bullied - this one is for you.
5 out of 5!

I’ve read other Stephen King books that I loved, but Carrie fell a bit short in comparison. To be fair, it was his first published novel, and I might have connected with it more if I had read it instead of listening to the audiobook, especially since the writing format was so different.
While Carrie is classified as horror, I found it more tragic than terrifying. Her experiences in high school mirror the real-life struggles of many bullied teens, some of whom, like her, have tragically reached a breaking point. Her mother’s abusive behavior, driven by extreme religious beliefs, added another layer of tragedy, one that, sadly, isn’t unfamiliar in reality. Recent cases, like the Ruby Franke documentary, show just how dangerous someone with irrational and ridiculous religious ideologies can be.
Carrie’s story is heartbreaking, not just because she was pushed to violence, but because even after the devastation, some of those responsible for her suffering felt no remorse. That, to me, was the most chilling part of all. It makes you loose hope for humanity.
