This was so disappointing coming for Sager. His last few books have steadily gone down hill and this one is taking that trip on a train. It was needlessly complicated and the whole plot of the book was pointless - even the majority of the characters pointed out how pointless it was and how it could and should have been resolved a different way. The main protagonist even discussed repeatedly how her choices made no sense but that she “had to do it this way for some unexplained reason”. It was tedious and frustrating to get through and it was made more so by how repetitive the “action” was throughout - first we will run to this car and there will be a dead body, then we will separate and tell everyone to stay in their cars and no one will and then we will run to this car and - surprise! - another dead body! And on and on it went. Even the twists became repetitive to the point I was laughing saying “you literally just did this 3 chapters ago”.

I felt no emotional attachment to any of the characters and although I was clearly supposed to feel aligned with and sad for the main character and her plight I just kept rolling my eyes at her and her choices and how pointless the whole thing was.

Definitely skip this one and if you haven’t read any Sager before - go back to his earlier work like Last Time I Lied and Final Girls - there’s nothing to discover in his new stuff other than disappointing plot devices, repetitive “twists” and eye rolling characters.

it was a good story and i had fun but not the thriller i was expecting

Get me on this train and let me kill all these idiots because the main character won’t. I thought this was supposed to be a revenge story?

Want to know how bad this was?

80%. That’s how far I was before I just couldn’t do it any longer. And I never DNF a Sager novel. Disappointing.

I was hooked on this book from the beginning! It’s very Murder on the Orient Express vibes, which is engaging, fun, and keeps you wanting to know what happens next! I do think there were times when it felt set more in modern times than 1954, but it didn’t bother me too much.
