I listened to this as an audiobook and it was well read.
The story is cute and mostly enjoyable. The premise of a brilliant blackamith with magical abilities who has crippling social anxiety is an interestion one. Its an unexpected combo.
The characters anxiety is brilliantly written, tho. It's almost painful, esp the audiobook. Well done, but it also meant that at times it was hard to keep going. I typically am reading as escape. Experiencing the characters anxious thoughts, self doubt, doom spirals, and panic attacks was too real at times. Also for me it was a bit unbalanced. It spends too much time in the main characters self-reflective anxiety and not enough time in the story.
I also appreciate when there's a twist I don't see coming. That happened a couple of times. Altho one of them I did not care for as I found it too far fetched.
Overall cute but not my personal favorite this year. I'm not sure if I'll read the second one.
