This was a fun read! Ziva’s character was unexpected, but I enjoyed following her adventure and seeing her overcome her struggles. The way Ziva created magicked weapons was interesting and I look forward to continuing the series.

Wow, what a captivating tale about a woman named Ziva, a skilled blacksmith who crafts extraordinary weapons. However, there’s one sword that must be kept hidden from the warlord’s prying eyes.
The adventure begins with evading the warlord, facing ambushes, uncovering secrets, and getting to know Kellyn. A world of action awaits, captivating you until the very end and leaving you yearning for more.

This is tricky to rate for me. A good story and probably the best and most accurate representation of severe social anxiety I've ever read--or seen on screen even. Truly it was like she'd read some of my teenage diaries. Sadly that made this a bit difficult for me lol I suffered severe social anxiety for most of my life and though I'm much improved now, this brought up a lot of stuff for me I don't like to think about. But it was a good plot and the characters were mostly fun and the romance was very sweet. I will likely read the sequel when it comes out.

This was such a fun read! It’s very fast-paced but still takes the time to develop the characters and their bonds with each other. The main character has social anxiety and, while it’s a little on the nose, it was refreshing to see in a fantasy novel. I loved the dynamic between our main group and I loved seeing Ziva grow throughout the story. She became much more comfortable not only with strangers like Kellyn and Petrik but also with herself. She’s more confident in her magical abilities and in the way she carries herself socially. I loved both of the romances. The way Kellyn appreciates Ziva’s quietness and is patient and attentive to her needs. As well as the opposites attract nature of Temra and Petrik. Overall this was a fun and fast YA fantasy. I can’t wait to read the sequel, especially after that abrupt ending.

If you decide to read this I HIGHLY recommend listening to the audiobook! The narrator was so good at the different voices as well as when the mc had panic attacks.
Anyways I borrowed the audiobook from Libby expecting to read this over the next few days. I ended up sitting around the entire day listening to it. So let’s dive into what I thought:

What I liked:
- unique plot
-I didn’t hate any of the characters
- it was pretty fast paced

What I didn’t like:
-the whole sister relationship

Thoughts:
I am sooooo tired of books where siblings are really nice and caring to each other and would do annnnnyyyything to save them. Like please. No. And Ziva was pretty unsupportive of her sister. Like whenever she does something risky Ziva is like ‘WHAT DO YOU THINK YOUR DOING!?! I LOVE YOU SOOOO MUCH AND I WOULDNT WANT ANYTHING TO HAPPEN TO YOU’ like come on! She was learning how to use self defense and you yell at her because she ‘could have gotten hurt’
I’m willing to overlook that though because it only happens once. Other than that this was a pretty solid book and I would recommend it.

After finishing the book, I felt ready and excited to the read the second book immediately!

The beginning of the book was a little how for me to get engaged with, but that’s how it’s been for a couple of months now, so I won’t hold it against the author, but about 33% of the way through I really got into the story and was at the edge of my seat waiting to see what happens next.

I always enjoy Tricia Levenseller’s writing style, it is a well written and easy for me to enjoy while also getting me really immersed into the world of the book.

I love everyone in the group. Ziva is my favorite and I deeply relate to her, as someone with severe anxiety I felt that Ziva was a great representation of what is like with anxiety. Kellyn is such a cutie pie, I like that he is a sweet and caring mercenary it is a good change from the stereotype of the dark and brooding personality that is often paired with the profession. Temra, Ziva’s sister is a good contrast to Ziva and her more reserved and cautious personality being more outgoing and less wary of people and situations. I loved that their flaws and strengths were closely related which how real life strengths and weaknesses works. And finally Petrik I don’t have a true opinion on him I won’t lie. I found his scenes and interactions with the rest of the characters quite boring but he was mysterious and I was always trying to guess his true intentions of joining the group on their journey and I was not disappointed when it was revealed.

I would definitely reread, I will probably reread when I’m not in this weird phase of slowly reading books right now. 10 out of 10 would recommend!
