Very long, very emotional, but worth the journey. It stuck with me for months, I reference the plot and characters almost daily!

This started off so promising but I'm left so disappointed. It was so repetitive, the writing was odd - trying to be funny, full of 'cuz, hadda, etc. So much detail about mountain climbing and other peoples lives. This probably could've been a good short story if you cut out all the waffle. Did I mention it was repetitive? I can't believe I had to read the one direction reference with my own two eyes.

First DNF of the year sadly.  Line was crossed when he started describing a mercy animal killing in the mountain.  Yes, based on everything else in books that I read, this is probably an odd line to draw and if it's a quick reference I'd be fine or if I'm really REALLY engaged in the book I'll skip ahead or power through but I wasn't enjoying this one already and that was just the end of it.  I didn't like either main character and the good bits were between lots of talk and philosophizing.  Maybe it's just something I need to physically read vs audiobook or the translation isn't doing this justice but I'm not sticking around anymore to find out.

“A good horror story didn’t end with death, but with something worse.”

Sam Avery is dating Nick Grevers, and gets the terrifying call that Nick has been in a climbing accident with his hiking partner, Augustin. Augustin’s body was never found, and Nick’s face is completely battered. The hospital believes he was in an avalanche, but the injuries look more sinister. They look like they’re from an ice pick.

This story is all over the place. The prologue with Sam’s sister was so spooky and had me looking over my shoulder, then it just disappeared. I honestly didn’t even realize the timeline shift at first. We basically start out at the end of the story. It flip flops throughout the entire book without reason, and it’s pretty confusing.

I enjoyed the general premise of Echo. It reminded me a lot of the Dyatlov Pass Incident, which I am obsessed with (pictured with the book). The execution, however, left something to be desired. It’s possible it’s because the book is translated from Dutch, but I had a hard time reading it. I REALLY didn’t care for Sam. The way Echo is set up, Sam is supposed to be the hero, and Nick is more the antihero. I didn’t like Sam, and felt bad for Nick. And if I read one more “hadda” I was going to explode.

There was potential here, but it missed the mark, unfortunately. Will I still recommend it? Yes; I believe someone out there may enjoy this much more than I did. If the premise interests you, I say pick it up and try it out for yourself.

“There are holes in the ice. They look just like eyes.”

I was fortunate enough to read an advanced review copy thanks to Net Galley and Tor Nightfire!

thanks to netgalley for the arc!

not gonna lie, i read the first few chapters of this and thought i was going to have a bad time. the beginning felt really jumbled and confusing. paired with my immediate dislike of one of the main characters, i thought i was setting myself up for a rough read; or worse, a dnf. that ended up not being the case as the story snatched my attention around the 20% mark and would not let me go until the end.

this story has three primary characters: nick (a journalist and outdoorsman), sam (nick's city slicker boyfriend), and the maudit (a mountain with a sinister will of its own). after a climb with fellow mountaineer augustin goes south, nick barely escapes with his life. now heavily disfigured and haunted by his memories of the doomed climb, nick begins to suspect that he didn't return from the mountain alone.

i'm a huge fan of folk horror, and this book really scratched that itch for me. it was incredibly atmospheric (after the mess that was the beginning) and full of some great moments that left me chilled.
i should go ahead and warn that this book has a heavy romance subplot. as someone that doesn't enjoy reading romance, i was worried that this would be a deal breaker for me, but it ended up being significant thematically and fit in the plot enough that it didn't feel out of place. (though there were some bits toward the beginning that really had me wanting to throw sam off a cliff, tbh.)

overall, i was surprised by how much i enjoyed this read. i was so invested once the plot picked up and started moving. it definitely could've benefited from an extra editing session or two since it's quite long for what it is, but it wasn't distractingly so. definitely give it a read if you enjoy folk horror!
