It's an interesting look at post-WWII life through the lense of an low-income Irish-Australian family. They don't hold back on racism and there is no specific condemnation of bigoted beliefs within the text either. The family is complicated and very human. Roie is the main focus of this book, she goes through the most growth. It was written to be contemporary, so it may be difficult for current readers but is still worth a read. I'm not sure if it was originally written for children but it does read like something I would have read as a kid.

This book deals with difficult issues and not necessarily with delicacy, so content warnings apply. There is also violence against sex workers and heavy religious culture (specifically Irish Catholic) throughout.

The racism and antisemitism is too much for me personally.
