This book has nearly everything - it can be overwhelming to a newcomer (hurrr)

Fantastic book for sexual advice, ideas, or simply a good laugh. I read it when I was 15 and I actually found it extremely helpful- since my high school's abstinence only education program certainly wasn't teaching me anything.

tolintook's review

I encounter descriptions about sexual assault often and have heard about them a great deal. I think it is important to also read about "sex positivity" or whatever you want to call it, to help deal with all this information about sexual assault, and to just promote sex positivity. It is somewhat difficult to come across sex positivity accidentally, while sexual assault is everywhere. It is important to talk about sexual assault and to educate people about it. But in my view, it is also important to spend time with sex positive books and ideas, and this is one such book. It is pretty explicit, there are of course levels of descriptions of sex positivity. There is also adrienne maree brown in Pleasure Activism (one book) and Emergent Strategy (another book) who talks about sex positivity but less in the kind of "how to" way they talk about it in the Guide to Getting it On. But anyway, these are different kinds of sex positive books, and I think they are important.
informative

Very informative and has great information for anyone who reads it. Would definitely recommend it for almost anyone. However, it is clear it was not meant to be read all the way through, as much of the 600 pages is repeating information already said elsewhere. Also, reads like a textbook, which is sub-ideal when trying to make a book that informs and educates people about important issues. Again, though, would definitely recommend it for anyone no matter what their stance on sex is or what part of life they are in. It also has great resources in the back of the book and can help anyone in any way regarding sex, intimacy, relationships, etc. 3/5 stars from me.

Nice open primer, the best part of the book was that instead of usual mumbo jumbo BS, the authors highly recommend you to go see proper certified medical professionals for your mental and physical issues and work on your underlying issues over a long period of time

part sex-ed textbook, part sex manual, "guide to getting it on" rides the line very well while still being an interesting book to read all the way through. it was nice to read a chapter, and discuss it with my partner every few days. i also appreciate the 'special thanks' with extra resources at the end of each chapter. the book isn't perfect; the lack of mention of transgender people, biology, or sexuality to be disappointing when the 10th edition is from 2022. only one mention of a trans man! sad! hoping if there's an 11th edition that trans voices are heard more.

Joannides uses humor to keep the book light in nature which seems clunky at times. Overall, I'd consider it a good starter book as far as sexual education is concerned. Chapters on LGBTQ related issues could use some help.
