I genuinely don’t know how to review this book. Other than I don’t think I liked it and I’m not glad I read it. It was super weird in not a good way. It’s also EVIL to leave a 1000+ page book on a cliffhanger. (Not to mention at least 300 pages could’ve been shaved off of this)
First of all, there is SO SO SO much incest in this book and truly no one cares. It is actually so gross
Additionally, this book to me has the trashy romance-y writing style of flowers in the attic. The romance plot is awful. They meet and are fully committed to eachother in all of 3 hours. There is no “falling in love” it is somehow both rushed and insufferably slow? Because they just go on and on about how much they want to bang.
I also feel like there isn’t enough pay off for the hundreds of pages you have to read. Like you keep going hoping for more, and you are left with an unhinged and unresolved ending.
The reason I kept reading this is because the mystery of the witches is fun and pretty compelling. Since it left on an awful cliffhanger I’m stuck between hating this book and wanting to know what’s going to happen. I wish I never started this in the first place. I think I might be an Anne rice hater?? But I do want to read interview with the vampire.

I love this book. A friend gave me the book hardcover copy after I had already read it in paperback. No problem, I read it again!. I have read it multiple times as well as Lasher and Taltos. Years ago, I got hooked on these novels. The Mayfair witches, all of them are a bunch of terrifically entertaining fiends, one and all. Great reading. I highly recommend this series.

Some wonderful settings and gorgeous atmosphere here but the book is so entrenched in incest you start feeling mucky every time you see the title. I finished it because I wanted to see how she ended it, but it wasn’t worth the torture. The house is fantastic though.
