Well written and a neat story, but my goodness it moves slow. I recommend listening at 2x speed (I promise it’s not too fast) on audio to reduce it to a 25 hour experience.

It started off with potential, you could simply feel the New Orleans setting & Rice's passion for it, but then it quickly plummeted into "romance novel." And a bad one, at that. Grumpy, saucy language "spoiler"
SpoilerI was determined to stick it out anyway, until what was supposed to be particularly good sex was described as being like "two way rape." OH FUCK RIGHT OFF. Giant-ass tome of trash, DNF.

When I got to the incest it put me off so much I just decided this was not the series for me.

The book was definitely compelling, and I was interested to the end. I didn't enjoy the ending, but considering there are two more books to come I suppose it was as it should be. I will definitely continue with the series.

Took too long to read and too much detail

Tedious, misogynistic, boring, just blah. It has no business being so incredibly long. I think I'm spoiled by all the wonderful creative bright and shiny feminist-forward witchy novels of the 21st Century but I just cannot waste my life on something this bland and miserable.

Skin-crawling horror that I couldn’t put down.

I just can’t. I’m so bored and it’s so weird. I just don’t care enough to finish and I didn’t connect with the writing at all.

The historical incest really made me dislike this. After reading another person's review it pretty much summed up the majority of my feelings to date on the book. The review didn't paint an interesting or worthwhile picture of the rest of the book. So just gonna put this one down....
