Quedé, ice, frío, hielo. Quedé aguda, grave y esdrújula, vemos y juzgamos. Quedé plano cartesiano, quedé arepa tiesa.
OK... Llevo, creo que desde inicios del 2024, full inmersa en los libros de Anne Rice, y créanme cuando les digo que cada libro se pone más perturbador que el anterior. Pero este libro es diferente. Los anteriores que he leído han sido de la saga de las Crónicas Vampíricas y estos, aunque están en el mismo universo, ya no tienen nada que ver con vampiros y nos adentramos al mundo de las brujas de Mayfair.
No es una lectura para cualquiera... porque, aparte de que es un tochón de libro de como 1200 páginas, la historia es supercompleja. No les miento que las primeras dos partes del libro son informes técnicos ETEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEERNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOS de la historia de las brujas de Mayfair. Literal, desde que quemaron a la primera, hasta la bruja más reciente. Son siglos y siglos de información (bien turbia, por cierto), que hacen que esas primeras partes sean supertediosas de leer y digerir. No me cabe en la cabeza cómo Annita se saca tanta paja y la plasma en este libro. O sea, yo los leía y les juro que una persona crédula o ignorante se hubiera creído que toda esa información es real. No deja ni una sola piedra sin voltear... ¿¿¿¿Y la forma en la que está escrita???? Locura total porque es como si estuvieras leyendo una investigación científica.
La historia de la familia Mayfair es una de las cosas más RETURBIAS que me he leído: la endogamia, actos ilícitos y sexuales, asesinatos, misterios, magia negra, el setting de la novela y muchas cosas más. Es una novela gótica por excelencia. Es que la ambientación es brutal; me quedo corta de palabras.
Lo descrito anteriormente (y muchas cosas más) es lo que hace que este sea uno de los libros más oscuros que me he leído de la autora. Me tenía que dar unos breaks tremendos porque corría el riesgo de quedar traumada (y definitivamente lo quedé). La parte de los informes es la más difícil de pasar, por su complejidad y el bombardeo de información, pero una vez que pasás eso, te fuiste y no podés parar. Yo nunca he leído así historias de brujas, pero con este libro me basta y me sobra y es una de las cosas más perturbadoras que he leído de la autora y en mi vida.
JAMÁS DE LOS JAMASES voy a superar el maldito Impulsor y todo lo que hizo. Y no solo es el personaje ese, sino la forma en que la Annita describió todas las escenas macabras y asquerosas de este libro. Una forma de escritura tan gráfica que hubo una parte que, honestamente, me dio tanto asco que hasta náuseas tuve. Además, mantiene una tensión e incertidumbre de lo que va a pasar en los últimos capítulos tan horrible que casi me dio un ataque de ansiedad y me tuve que tomar un break en el panic room del trabajo.
¿Y cómo es el final? BRUTAL, AGONIZANTE, TRAUMANTE y todos los adjetivos que se puedan imaginar. Ya quiero empezar el otro libro, pero tengo miedo. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Ahora, no sé si recomendar este libro. Pero si tienen ganas de leer, háganlo bajo su propio riesgo y ármense de paciencia y una cruz.
Por cierto, estos libros se han vuelto muy difíciles de encontrar, así que si alguien se encuentra uno por ahí, me lo puede regalar o vender. 😉😉

I've read & reread this book several times. I must like it.... The 5 stars are from an earlier read. This time I would maybe give a 3.5. I loved the historical portions, but felt the parts setting up,who Rowanis and who Michael is dragged.
There are (very) disturbing parts & themes. That is part of why this is categorized as a Horror book.

Boring. I tried, but this book is far too long and there is so much unnecessary detail. I couldn’t even tell you what the plot was supposed to be. I understand how some people may enjoy this writing style, but it’s just not for me.

Long, dark, and twisted tale. A bit overdramatic and non pc at times, but interesting enough to keep me wanting to know what happens next.
Parts of this book were brilliant, parts of it were awful, all of it was way too long. Not bad, but the series crashed and burned after this book. I felt Anne Rice was too self indulgent with this book.
VERY slow paced, and to be fair, I bought this when I was collecting all her books, before I realized I didn't really care about the Mayfair witches so...
This book was a mixed package for me. I felt the beginning and end were pretty strong and solid entries for the book, but the middle was lacking. I really don't like the fact that we were told the Mayfair history from third person. I much rather have had the story told through the POVs of the Mayfair themselves. This book would have been better. I didn't like how detached it was from the Mayfairs.
It just read as borderline non-fiction and while I like a good non-fiction, I rather it not be a non-fiction of something fictional. I just didn't like the detached writing.
However, that ending was great the creepy and unsettling horror being built up through Rowan's pregnancy and climax was very disturbing and a powerful ending.
But the middle is just sagging. It was a chore to read the middle, so that brought the rating down.

My first Ann Rice book. And likely my last.
The historical parts of this book, while long, are an intriguing read. Other than that, the main two characters are too hard to believe. Too much too soon, in love in a day, etc. I hoped I would read more witch stuff, not demonic weirdness - while the sex scenes can be good read, it's not what I was expecting. Didn't know that was part of this writer's thing.
It wasn't a bad book. But I think I liked the parts that weren't probably the most fun for everyone else (witch history). And I agree wholeheartedly that the book ended poorly. I was ready for a battle with the main female lead and got nothing.
However, the reviews for the second one are so awful I can't bring myself to finish the series. Especially since the female lead in this book seems to lose all the spirit I thought she had in this one.
