So utterly enjoyable. So much to soak in, will have to read again. In the top 3 of Erdrich’s books for me.

I read this in college, but I still think about it every once in awhile. That's the sign of a good book to me.

A young woman on the frontier in the early 20th century is mistaken for a Roman Catholic priest and chooses, for decades, not to correct the misidentification, living as a man and as the cleric of a small Native American community on the Plains and becoming, almost, a part of their families and culture. As a priest myself, I will say that not many authors quite get what it's like to be a clergyperson or parish pastor, but Erdrich absolutely does.

Although the writing was exquisite, I had a difficult time keeping track of the numerous characters.
