Fascinating. Also. If you have a thing with spiders - maybe don’t. But. Fascinating.
I enjoyed the play on civilization development. It was well written and researched. But the jumps dry it up a bit. Some of the jumps are a bit much and that’s what keeps me from a 5. At one point I wasn’t sure I would finish it because it seemed to drag a few chapters too far.

A lot of great sci-fi discussion in this book but it started to get old for me pretty early in the book and I was waiting for it to hurry up and end. A lot of moments drag with more description and winding than needed in my opinion and could be shorter given how much is repeated over and over throughout what feels like a saga. The ending is pretty good though.

While not perfect (I'd give it 4.5 stars if able), this book is a great example of why I love sci-fi: it takes society out of the context of the here and now and layers in unfamiliar circumstances in a way that lets us "safely" tip everything on its side and re-examine society's deeply-held assumptions from a new perspective. ("Safely" because surely we're not talking about us, we're talking about these aliens from another time.) The result is a work of art that is both entertainment and educational, sneakily teaching you something about the world you actually live in, and perhaps even yourself, along the way.
I'd tell you what it was I learned but then that would ruin the fun for you, now wouldn't it?
Also:spiders.

Fricking brilliant. The death of humanity, the rise of spider monsters and a twist at the end. Wonderful writing that pulls you through. This is NOT your pulp fiction invasion of the spider monster though. It is a brilliant analysis of evolution.
The human half of the book is kinda slow and boring sometimes but the spider half makes up for it
