Great world building, as they say in the blurbs on the back. Good enough that I read it in a day.

This book was such a joy to read. I loved seeing the evolution of a new species and thinking about how they would go about life. The ending actually surprised me, which is rare. I really enjoyed this one. I might even read it again, thus it is a 5 star book for me.
Spiders are big this year, apparently. This is a strikingly original book, and I loved it.
It is great to read a sci-fi novel from a scientist with expertise outside of physics or astronomy. Tchaikovsky's zoology degree is put to good use in his novel as he constructs an interesting alien species and outlines engaging avenues about how such an alien society would evolve. This really makes the world building lots of fun. Tchaikovsky also plays a few good literary tricks to keep you personally invested in "individuals" when the story spans eons. The ending was not exactly standard for this sub-genre of contact sci-fi either. While there are a couple of deus ex machina events, I would still highly recommend this novel to all sci-fi lovers.
Blown away. This book is an absolute masterpiece and my first exposure to Tchaikovsky. I have not read a book that covers as grand themes so eloquently as this book. The world building, religious, philosophical, and evolutionary themes in this story are literally mind-blowing.
I might go as far as saying this is the very best book I have ever read...
