I've been a fan of Hannah E. Carey for quite a while now, and her newest novel, The Ascendant, was just as enjoyable as all of her previous work!
This is the second book in the Legacy series and follows Ciara and Niall as they continue on their journey together to save the island of Pern Coen from forces that would destroy it. Through that journey they grow closer together and... well, you'll have to read for yourself to find out what happens.
What I loved: the Celtic-inspired homage to nature runs throughout the entire story - from the characters to the setting and even the magical world that Carey has built. I'm a huge nature lover and The Ascendant really makes you see the magic in the nature that surrounds us every day. I also love Ciara - she's a warrior and continually acts as heroine in this series, but she's not your standard wonder woman. She's got a disability and has to work through that vulnerability and use it as her strength. That representation matters so much - not only because we rarely see characters with any kind of disability in books, but because we all have some kind of weakness that we let get us down occasionally. I also really love that I can always count on Carey for a happy ending. Crying and heartbreak is not what I want when I read a romance and I know I'm safe in Carey's pages.
Things I'd warn you about - there are very few content warnings here, but just a couple minor things to be aware of including abusive relationships and very minor animal abuse. Again, Carey's books are lighthearted and fade-to-black, so you're not getting into anything explicit or traumatizing here, but if those things are triggers for you, read with caution.
Carey's books are like candy for me - quick to consume and guaranteeing a sweet ending. If you're into clean fantasy romance, I highy recommend her books!
