This was slow for me to get into but the last several chapters made me glad I read the book. I wished it got into it more, but the twist was satisfying.

I picked this up because I wanted to read another book similar to R.F. Kuang’s Yellowface and while this didn’t quite live up to Kuang’s novel, it was still pretty decent. The major difference is that while Yellowface was more literary fiction with a thriller subplot, Who is Maud Dixon is definitely a thriller with a literary fiction subplot. That being said, I feel like this was a pretty solid thriller with morally grey characters that I thoroughly enjoyed reading about.

This was, for me, mostly pretty predictable, but I still really enjoyed the ride. There's a great slow-burn build of tension and unease, culminating in an absolutely wild sequence of events, and I felt truly uncomfortable and unsettled throughout. I particularly loved the parts set in Morocco, as there was just such a wonderfully vivid sense of place and that really heightened things for me. The main characters are for the most part thoroughly unlikeable, but are definitely very well-crafted. And, even though I worked out most of what was going to happen, I still really appreciated the commentary on identity, power, and the publishing industry, and overall had an enjoyable reading experience.

Oof this book wasn’t what I expected. I guess I didn’t realize how dark and  thoroughly unlikeable the characters would be.

It wasn’t clear where things were heading in the middle of the book. I thought the major twists at the end that the other reviewers had promised would make it worth it but the first one wasn’t really that surprising and the second one  made me a little sick to my stomach to learn how ruthless she was.

I gave it 3 stars because it was still an interesting read that held my attention and the writing was solid.
