DID NOT FINISH

Couldn't get into it and stopped early on in the book

One of the best.

4 stars - It was great. I loved it.

I could definitely see where Cameron used this as inspiration for Avatar, yet it was a completely different story.

A fun and wondrous adventure through one of the coolest concepts for an alien world that I've ever read. Foster describes so many species of flora and fauna that I was overwhelmed with his imagination and ingenuity. It has a killer ending that makes the book better than it has any right to be. As someone interested in botany, I found myself being drawn into the world easily, and enjoyed my time there a lot.

That being said, it's not like this book is some piece of high literary mastery. The characters and their motivations are dull and forgettable. The prose is average at best most of the time. But the good things is that Foster understands the goal of the book, and doesn't try to make it anything it doesn't need to be. It's a great bite sized adventure, perfect for a quick read.

it’s cool to read fun descriptions of fantastical plants, fungus, animals, and blends thereof that reside in this seven story rain forest. I wish there were more descriptions of these creatures outside of how they’re used for the plot, many species are introduced with how the hunters use them for their own means, which seems to partially go against the big idea behind “emfol” a means of pseudo-communication or respect between human and plant. reading about these cool new creatures is sadly the most this book has going for it, you have to trudge through anti-Indigenous primitivism, slurs
from the bad guys<spoiler/> and sexist fighting over a girl tension to reach anything interesting about this planet’s ecosystem and society. the ending fight is kind of good in how characters are pitted against eachother. minor spoiler about the history of people on the planet:
it is no mistake that the group of “Natives” arrived to the planet 400 years ago and already forgot all that history in their oral tradition<spoiler/>

Not a Flinx novel. Takes place centuries before Flinx visits the planet Midworld. One of the original colony ships was forced to land its people and many died but a few adapted and bred and over time evolved to fit the world. It was found again by members of the Commonwealth that landed illegally to exploit the planet's bio diversity. Born, the mad man, the black sheep of his tribe finds one of their downed skimmers with two people still alive and brings them to his tribe and offers to help them traverse the dangerous distance back to their station. When he gets them there and sees what they are doing with the plants and the planet he uses the planet to destroy the station including the two humans he had saved. Born had done many brave things hoping for applause which never came, hoping for the love of a woman who in the end didn't choose him. This trip changed him, he no longer needed the praise and adulation he had striven for all his life and no longer cared that the woman did not choose him. He had found himself.

Interesting concept and nice story. Feels like there is much more here to be explored. I would like to read more books in the series...

Somewhat reminiscent of Aldiss’s HOTHOUSE, and reputedly an inspiration for Cameron’s AVATAR, this is a very atmospheric and engaging novel. The writing is fairly workmanlike, but the tale is a good one and the pace never flags. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
