last book i read from ibsen in my play reading class. i learned to love him and his way of writing in this course from Dollhouse to When E
We Dead Awaken.
specifically about this one though, i felt the characters weren't tangible as ibsen's other works and it had an abrupt ending, but as usual, he made me feel beauty and terror and left me much to interpret.

Written in 1899 at the age of 71; Ibsen lived another 7 years but was in poor health and never returned to writing. In When We Dead Awaken Ibsen seems to anticipate his own death, depicting an elderly artist – in this case a sculptor, Professor Rubek – confronting the toll his artistic vocation has taken on himself and those around him. An intensely symbolic, surreal work. All of the references and analogies to stone are important. Like the bear hunter who carves sinew and flesh, Rubek carves stone which wants to stay dead but is violently “hammered into life.” A lifetime of creating art has alienated Rubek from the world and from all those he once had human relationships with – he and his former model Irene are now “two clay-cold bodies.” This is a play unlike anything else Ibsen wrote in that Irene is a truly supernatural figure. This is a drama without a particularly definable plot, with an atmosphere vaguely reminiscent of some works of magical realism. William Archer thought the play was an “self-caricature” too absorbed in symbolism and self-indulgent brooding to have any value independent of its context as Ibsen’s final work. I am not sure I agree – it certainly doesn’t display the dramatic gifts that made Ibsen Ibsen, but taken for what it is, it is a poetic and provocative reflection on being an artist in proximity to death that only the 71 year old Ibsen could have provided.

What the fuck did I just read. Picked this up from the Said book On Late Style which discussed this briefly.

Insanely dark, depressing, full of imagery of rocks/turning into rocks/ossification. Some pretty obvious symbolism in this work, which isn't particularly interesting (the tangible muse trying to murder him), but the overall sense of being dead and struggling to be alive was really interesting and well-played out.

Whaaaat? This book, by no means, was for the solemn purpose to complet my Goodreads Challenge of this year. Well, maybe a little.

By the way my rating is of a confused furry cat. Let's say Schrödinger's cat. As Irene, we don't really know if he's alive or not.
