i thought i was gna like this a lot more than i did.  i loved the premise and i love a tortured genius. i felt like so much of it especially toward the end was focused on Mrs Luzhin and caring for Luzhin and i just. didn’t care ab her. i was into it and then i took a break and then continuing it was really rough and felt super repetitive and boring. I wanted to see the decay of his interiority and passions and state. the end kinda broke me tho. i’m sure it was great writing throughout but i just wasn’t paying attention

Imagine you cannot last enough to learn a lesson, make a friend, express a feeling, love, nostalgize, feel a loss, grow emotionally, and simply reflect. You cannot but collapse into a hermetic world of your own. As a matter of fact, Luzhin's small inner world was usurped by chess, but be not mistaken, this is not about chess, this is about his lifelong struggle to be like everyone else, to be an ordinary human.

Nabokov is a master of wording, he's able to express the finest emotion, the weirdest mood in a few well-chosen words. But he can get nerdy and dive into long and boring descriptions. Overall, the book starts like a dynamic Bildungsroman and soon turns into an autistic hell, tedious and hard to get through.

Updated: It crossed my mind today that the title itself was a pun. It naturally refers to Luzhin's chess tactics, but it may also hint at his besieged lifestyle, sheltered from the world. That'd be very much in Nabokov's spirit. And just as he failed to defend himself against Turati, so did his defenses collapse under the weight of life and his own demons.
SpoilerDid he win that last fight? Did he overcome and release himself? Idk, rest in peace, dude.

i really liked this…. i love chess metaphors and i love nabokov’s writing style although i did find this somewhat confusing. but in an understandable way does that make sense….. i liked it a lot.

What a pure joy. Of Nabokov's first three novels, this might be my favorite.
