This has been on my to-read list for years, both as a therapist and a daughter of a mother who has bipolar disorder.

Thank you for being vulnerable. Obviously some of the information Kay wrote is outdated now, but it's still a very intense look into psychology during the 70s/80s, as well as someone struggling with what was then-called manic-depressive disorder.

If you are inundated with a mood disorder, or family of someone with one, this book really articulates the tragedy and realities of bipolar disorder in a gorgeous and terrifying way I could never have personally described myself. The book is coloured by the context of Jamison’s life stories and clinical wisdom, which helps personify that the disease doesn’t take away living moments!

It was a much easier read than expected for the heft of the topic, which alludes to Jamison’s poetic writing style. I would highly recommend it to anyone who feels alienated in their journeys, and to young psychologists, to remember and appreciate that the knowledge of treating mood disorders, have only really be a few decades old.

I’ve had this book for YEARS but never had the strength to pick it up till now. Pick it up. It’s worth it.

WOW

What a treasure. This is absolutely going to be best book of the year if not top three. It was such an amazing read. The story and the writing was great, I truly connected and I feel as though I found a companion in this memoir. This illness leaves one prone to loneliness. I didn't feel so lonely after reading this book.

This book did a really good job at explaining and helping me to understand manic depressive disorder. Many things I would have orignally thought to be schizophrenia can also present in people as mania (which I never fully understood until now) and psychosis isn't just exclusive to schizophrenia and unresolved trauma. It was a very interesting read. Slightly hard to follow at times, but really helped to shed light on a very serious mental disorder if it's left untreated.
