A visitor arrives one day at Yaichi's doorstep. Mike and Yaichi's twin brother Ryoji, were married and lived in Canada, and while Ryoji and Mike had planned to someday travel together to Japan to introduce Mike to Ryoji's family, sadly that hope was never realized before Ryoji passed away. Arriving now alone, Mike has come to get to know Yaichi and his daughter Kana.

Wow, this book is beautiful and uplifting, and it will make you feel all of the emotions. Tagame is insanely talented at rendering human thought and emotion. The detailed scenes and conversations gives it a very autobiographical feel, though that may not necessarily be the case. Mike's eventual departure was heartbreaking — I ridiculously wanted Mike to move to Japan as Kana had bonded so strongly with him and clearly wanted her uncle in her life.

What this book is, is a look a what it means to accept someone after they're gone, accept who they are and learn to let go of the prejudices that were ingrained in yourself from what society dictates. This book is about found families coming together, and learning to love and let go of loved ones. It's about growing and understanding people you once thought you knew but pushed away without realizing that you did it because of preconceived notions that are ingrained in your society. Sometimes it takes the death of a loved one for someone to realize that not everything in the world is black and white. For the main character to see that his own child holds none of these prejudices that are warring inside of his own mind, makes him realize just how much society needs to grow, and the fact that he stands up to others after meeting his brother's husband, makes his personal growth something that many would have if they lived through this same experience. This is a story that should be read by all, but we all know how society is and people will push back because of those same preconceived notions that they grew up around, it is a story that is important for the LGBTQ+ community because they wish for acceptance in places where they're marginalized.
