Strong historical fiction. I enjoyed it.

An excellent book. I kept forgetting it wasn't nonfiction - reads like a memoir!

I enjoyed the beginning of the book more than the middle and end. I learned a lot about the Navajo people and code talkers. I found that interesting but I didn’t enjoy how the story is told. I get that Ned is supposed to be telling this story to his grandchildren but it’s really tangential which makes the story feel disorganized to me. I look forward to teaching this book again next year.

I have been wanting to read a book about the code talkers, but the ones I saw seemed to have too much traditional history for me - people, dates, facts. I need story. This one has that. It is a good way for me to learn history, as I tend to be turned off by traditional histories. It isn't perfect, but it held my interest and was informative.

An informative historical fiction book. The story is formatted as the main character telling the story to his grandchildren, which I wasn’t a huge fan of because it displaced the reader from the story. The characters were lovable though and the story was good, if a little slow at times.

I kind of liked it but I just couldn’t really get into it. It just seemed very like a lot. It was hard to understand and take in. I don’t think I’ll be reading anymore books about war.
