a great book that paints a picture of what the fight in the Pacific was like it seamlessly ties Navajo culture into a masterpiece
A simultaneously emotional and educational dive into the Navajo code talkers of WWll. I appreciated the dedication to detail and accuracy. James Bruchac clearly did his research and has great respect for the Navajo nation. He aso includes a bibliography and other resources at the end of the book for those who want to learn more.
The biggest flaw to me was the lack of character given to the narrator, Ned Begay. With the demanding level of detail this book needed, I can understand his needs as a character falling to the wayside. Still, I appreciate main characters that are a little more than a self-insert for the reader.

I only read this book because it's one of the ones I've been assigned to teach my students, but I'm so glad I did. It's a great historical novel about a piece of US history that I didn't know anything about. It often feels as if you are actually reading someone's memoir. The story is not sensationalized, but it's still moving and emotional. I can't wait to start reading it with my students.

Important and engaging story I didn’t know about until recently. I didn’t love the writing style and almost gave 3 stars instead of 4. Really enjoyed the afterward from the author.
