I was drawn in by the story of this book, with two characters pretending and using masks to protect themselves or hide a part of their lives. With an under ying mystery plot to help move the story along. Elssiande and Lord Vere were interesting characters to read, perhaps not the most classic likeable character but had compelling motivations and personalities. This novel delivered on the tension, with two characters in a relationship with different expectations and reasons. Like most historical romances it was an easy read and held my attention.

the way I live for hidden identities and realizing your husband isn't actually an idiot after all. Blame the scarlet pimpernel, but it is my favorite trope

After reading and throughly enjoying [b:The Burning Sky|17332556|The Burning Sky (The Elemental Trilogy, #1)|Sherry Thomas|https://d.gr-assets.com/books/1370201603s/17332556.jpg|24037683], I wanted to read some of Thomas's adult novels. I liked this in a lot of ways, but thought the hero was too much of a jerk for too long. After seeing what her uncle was capable of he totally should have mellowed a bit. Could not figure out why Ellie was in love with him based on his behavior toward her. As the reader seeing into his head, I liked him more than she should have, but still thought he was a jerk. I'm thinking based on some of my friends reviews there are better Thomas books out there so I will try one more of her adult novels before deciding to just stick with her YA.

I didn't care about the duo of characters, even less about the hero's brother love story. The book was easy to read but not enjoyable. I managed to finish it by listening to the audio-book.

It's a missing opportunity because I enjoyed the beginning with the hero, faking to be an idiot and the heroin using her fake smiles as her shield of her true feelings.

... I want to like this more than I did. Sherry Thomas is such a great writer, and her plots continue to draw me in and keep me riveted, but I felt like this wrapped up a bit too easily, which was frustrating after an entire book of obfuscation and misdirection on the part of both the hero and heroine.

I was not feeling this story. I appreciate the attempt at a unique hero--pretending to be an idiot but really an intelligent spy. The conflict was a bit confusing and not compelling, not enough angst, and the story was a bit disjointed. Previous books were great but we can't win them all.

Elissande has been caring for her sick aunt for most of her life and her uncle has ensured she has no friends and very few if any pleasures in life, so when, while her uncle is away, her neighbor comes by begging a place to stay for herself and her house party for a few days because her home has been over run by rats she agrees. She also starts to plan to catch a husband so that someone will take her and her aunt away from this abusive situation.
Lord Vere works for the home office(or something like) but he does it by playing the part of an idiot, so when he sees the woman of his dreams he cringes that he has to stay in his roll, but then he figures out that she's husband hunting and is less excited but still can't keep away from her.
This was an interesting story but there is emotional and physical abuse in it.
