This book automatically loses one star because it is deceiving: it is not really about the mothman prophecies at all. At least, not to the extent I was expecting.
Entertaining read that barely holds its own. Much of Keel's claims are historically erroneous and his narcissism gets to be quite tedious after awhile. Additionally, I only found it to be scary during a small section of the text and this is due to the tendency of the author to bounce around a lot during his writing.

Don't go into this book expecting a cohesive narrative with plot points & character development, it's not that. Keel falls just short of describing a sort of grand theory of the paranormal in this compilation of contactee tales & recollections of his time as a UFO investigator. But he's not a scientist, he's a journalist, & he writes as such & I think it's that clipped, boiled down tone that turns some readers off. I've read this book a few times now & it's a wild ride through fairly commonplace UFO lore. There's a lot of Men in Black content here, a bit about the Mothman, some moonburn syndrome descriptions, & of course a rundown of Derenberger's supposed contact w the extradimensional Indrid Cold. Weird dudes, I had a good time.

So the 5% of this book that was about Mothman and Point Pleasant was great. The rest of it was about alien abductions and contactees and just... not good.
Watch the movie instead.

One of the greatest accounts of high strangeness written by anyone. Even if you're unsure of the more dubious elements, the story is still engaging enough. Enjoy after dark for maximum twilight zonage.
