It both tells the story of the Fort McMurray fire but also dives into our relationship with fire and fossil fuels.
The climate science bit was a little long for me. I didn't pick up the book to read about that so wasn't expecting so much.

The book is centered around the concept that in the not-so-distant future “fire weather may be the only weather.” The theme is explored scientifically and emotionally with an in-depth, chronological explanation of the bitumen industry in northern Canada; a play-by-play of the Fort McMurray Fire; and an overview of what Vaillant calls the “Petrocene Age” and its consequences.

The Fort McMurray Fire is one of the most costly disasters in Canadian history and the largest evacuation in the country’s history, burning over 1.5 million acres. It’s not lost on me and many others that the town itself would not have existed without the fossil fuel industry. And that the increase in fire weather and the lengthening of fire season is a result of the rapidly growing fossil fuel industry.

“It becomes clear that we are here by a strange and precarious grace.” The ecosystem that has made it possible for us to build beautiful lives is delicate, fragile, and exists in perfect harmony. It deserves our best efforts to protect it.
