Saunders came highly recommended and did not disappoint. The stories in this anthology range from to sci-fi thought experiments to the achingly workaday, and Saunders imbues every character with an authenticity that makes them relatable even when they're dispicable, sinister, or pathetic.
Saunders toys with a variety of themes but definitely has his favorites. He's most confident depicting characters who have been eroded by the tiny points of friction in everyday life, with defining moments sprinkled in to aid in the characterization. That admittedly becomes a bit repetitive, like a painter that uses mostly oranges and browns. Spiderhead stands out in memory due to the shift in both tone and, arguably, genre. The result is a provocative story that cuts to the root of what makes us human, featuring characters that are invitingly earnest.
