i cannot believe this is ACTUALLY a late bloomer story. i’m joyful and a bit flabbergasted by the representation of one of the lead women (autocorrect consistently trying to say leaf women feels too on the nose) embracing her first romantic and sexual experiences around 25–27-ish (? not entirely sure which age she turns in the novel) and that being such a neutral and accepted part of the relationship/story. there was no difficult backstory as a direct reason, just being autistic and guarded and living with an older relative. WE NEED MORE OF THIS!

some of the characters’ motivations and/or the lack of portrayal of how they felt about some things were confusing or kind of goofy?? but it was overall a sweet and funny story with some really hard parts of being alive woven in pretty well. the neurodivergence present in opal and pepper and how their brains contrasted and complimented each other was really nice to read and resonate with. loved the setting, too!
fast-paced

I might pick it up later this year but the author's writing style is just not for me. It's really annoying how even though the book is dual-POV, both characters' chapters use the same specific phrases. I read (almost) exclusively sapphic/FF books so I know it's not nearly as difficult to make two female characters different from each other as this book makes it seem. Overall not necessarily a bad book, but it just didn't keep me entertained, despite my initial excitement (and I don't dnf books too often.)

Chaotic force of nature, Opal, uses her lottery winnings to buy a flower farm and cultivate her own future as an artist. Her plans go awry when she arrives at said flower farm and is greeted by Pepper, prickly and grieving the loss of her grandmother, who claims the farm belongs to her. Having no where to go, both strangers decide to live under the same roof until Pepper can garner enough profits from the farm to buy it back from Opal. Nothing could go wrong, right?
Late Bloomer was such a sweet sapphic love story, sprinkled with flower puns and dazzling with heart. This book also includes accurate neurodivergent representation in both Opal and Pepper. I found that both Opal and Pepper were very likable and it was enjoyable to swim around in their minds. I found myself laughing out loud at some of the dialogue. The author also included flower imagery and symbols where ever she could. An overall fun book to read.

everything about this made me cry, but mostly that this one passage in late bloomer made me think of my favorite quote from @kaitgrange on tiktok: “warmth can coexist with grief”, which in my life also fits so serendipitously with this one scene in the book. i think some books are meant to find you and give you hope, the same way that some people are meant to find you and give you hope. i’m confident that late bloomer is just that for me.
