😲 <--- just this emoji a bunch of times. I was freaking blown away by this book. Idk why I'm so surprised, literally every single person that I've seen read this has loved it. But I just don't pick up lit fic that often, so I wasn't expecting much, I guess. But the realness! The relatability! The race and class dynamics! Also 3 year-old Briar is EVERYTHING! Please read this, my dudes.

This was such a deeply uncomfortable book to read. I don't really understand a lot of choices the author made. I felt like we spent a lot of time in Alix's inner world, but I don't feel like we spent enough time getting to know Emira. And everything that happens is just so awful and messy and selfish. And the ending with Alex was such a disappointment—I literally rolled my eyes. I felt like this book was written to be dramatic and scathing, a portrait of the subversive "but I'M not racist, I read BLACK AUTHORS" racism, but it just felt like a bunch of ugly people being ugly to each other without a lot of nuance and with a lot more fatphobia than I anticipated.

This book was so good! It's a very well written, nuanced look at some of the ways racism and privilege can show up in and interact with each other. A review by Elizabeth Day of the book written on the back cover of the copy I'm reading mentions Kiley Reid's empathetic writing style, and that is a huge part of why this book is so hard hitting. She is able to show you how to understand the characters deeply, which makes their painful, ignorant, or cruel decisions all the more heartbreaking and uncomfortable. I highly suggest that while reading this book, you think about it in relation to the real world and even to your own life. There is a lot to learn from this book and it is packaged up perfectly by an extremely talented author.
