An amazing tale that delves deep into ingrained racism and the many layers of privilege.
I also found profoundly impacting that we have a main character, Emira, who doesn’t ambition much and that has no idea what she wants to do with her life. It is a strange age. But, aren’t they all. No one should feel like they have to have a life plan, a perfect ambition. Not everyone needs that. I related to this a lot.
The book very much sank its teeth in me, thus I binged it in less than 5h, eager to see what would happen between Emira and her new white boyfriend and her new white boss, and what would result of their eagerness to support her, of their need to improve her life, measuring her as only a Black girl, as if they’re all the same, when Emira clearly knows what she doesn’t want, what she is, and only wants to be left alone and live a quiet normal adult life.
A great and eye opening read, that made me look inside my own privilege and preconceived ideas.

I really enjoyed the perspectives of both characters and liked the story overall. Something felt lacking for me plot wise, but I haven't been able to put my finger on it. Definitely would recommend this book to anyone looking to gain perspective on the experience of being a Black young women, specifically working as a
nanny
. Also deals with a romance, although it is not the primary focus. Dual POV, limited third person.

I was really expecting to not like this book because I feel like there was a lot of hype for it a couple of months ago, and I have an ✨individuality complex✨ but I absolutely loved this book!

I guess I was expecting a similar character relationship as in Finlay Donovan Is Killing It, but very intrigued by what this book turned out to be.

I think this book was a genius showcase of white fragility, white “allies”, white wokeness, and the troubles behind intention vs perception. There were so many other themes and messages within this book that’d I’d need to write a paper on it to do it justice haha. Overall, just a very expertly crafted novel that had me audibly laughing, gasping, and crying out.
