One of the most beautiful books about marriage and San Francisco I have ever read. Sheer mind blowing delight.

2.5 stars. The beginning of this book had me hooked, but after about 25% it was just too slow for my liking. The main characters were interesting, I enjoyed the portions where we learned more about their backstories, but the side characters were bland and nothing really happened in this book. The writing was good, but I struggled to finish this.

Really loved this book. The writing was fantastic. I would reread paragraphs just because I loved them.

I fell out of love with this book as it went on. Despite some swooningly gorgeous passages, there was something that rang false about Pearlie; she was more an idea than a person. I mean, there is quite deliberately (I assume) a hole in the middle of this story, a handsome cipher where Holland is meant to be, but as I got the end of the story, I began to feel like that blankness extended out to everyone, and I was left holding a book that erased itself as I read it.

While the writing is beautifully poetic, the story felt scattered and the telling fragmentary. Maybe this was intentional but it left me confused and annoyed.
