The "closure" of Hoke's story had me tearing up and having to pause multiple times. The other characters didn't measure up after that.
It felt awkward reading about open racism during these times of BLM. But the book is good overall.

Another great one from Allen Eskens. I love this author and enjoyed this as much as the others in the series.

I typically love Eskens' books but this one fell a little short for me. It was a different type of book than his usual crime thrillers. Rather, this was historical fiction, which was unexpected. Once I was able to settle in to the fact that this was more of a coming of age book of a white boy in the 60s who is friends with a black boy. They are in rural Missouri and racism is an underlying theme throughout this book.
There is a murder/missing person but that's not the focus of the story. Rather the focus is on Boady, who is a recurring character in Eskens' other books.
Overall it was good, but a bit slow, especially if you are used to the fast paced books that Eskens usually writes.

This book exceeded my expectations in so many ways. However, I have to say, that I was hoping it would! In the aspects of the novel's time and setting - I shared being a teenager in high school in 1976, and though I grew up in St Louis, Missouri, now live in a small rural town in the Missouri Ozarks. So, those two aspects of the novel already caught my attention. (I should note that I found this book on the New Arrivals shelves at my library, and picked it up on a whim after reading the synopsis on the inside cover jacket.) This is the first book I have read by Allen Eskens, but I think I will be looking for more of his work in the future. Nothing More Dangerous was spot on in so many ways -- the pacing, which felt like it began in 1st gear and over time smoothly notched up into 4th gear -- the character development which felt natural and not forced -- and the plot development. Having read that the writer was a criminal defense attorney for 25 years definitely seems to have benefited the authenticity of his subject matter. Lastly, I would agree with another Goodreads reviewer who said that this would make a marvelous movie! Movie or mini-series on either cable tv or on Netflix.

A fantastic mix of history and intrigue. I purchased Saving Emma not realizing it was a series, and I’m very glad I read this first!

LOVED this book. Great characters. Reminded me a bit of To Kill a Mockingbird. A lot was packed into the story and it all really worked.
