This is far from my usual genre, but the book was a gift so I felt I had to read it. I read a review that said to truly enjoy one of Baldaccis’ books you just have to let go and enjoy the unbelievability, and that was a great piece of advice.

Full of action, guns and violence, it almost felt like I was watching an action movie. A back story and love interest thrown in made it a little more enjoyable for me. It was unpredictable and I must admit that I was gripped in the last few chapters. Not a book for me, but it’s always good to try something out of your usual genre even if you don’t really enjoy it right?

An excellent plot and likable characters (Robie and Reel) are spoiled by Baldacci's use of every "wrong" dialogue tag ever blacklisted by the grammar nazis. An incessant barrage of "said___ curtly", "added" "inquired" "Interjected" "retorted" "shot back" etc., etc., ad infinitum.

I've always liked Will Robie, and Jessica Reel impressed me as possibly the best example of a female character being a mortal "Wonder Woman" in any thrillers I've read. She walks on the edge, pushing bad guys to the limit, taunting, knowing she'll prevail no matter what.

The pace is a bit sluggish but still better than some endless novels that could have been trimmed by 1/3.

After having seen Will and Jess at their strongest - as assassins in The Target - I'm just let down when they get put back into these detective roles. It is not their strength and while they are smart and skilled, they fumble a lot. Which is a testament to David Baldacci's ability to render his character's believably, though. If they suddenly were like Amos Decker (another Baldacci series where he IS a detective) I would be frustrated at the inaccuracy. I just wish we'd see them as assassins more instead.

I did appreciate the chance to understand Blue Man better and see where he's from. And, as always, they did land in a complicated mess far worse than anticipated when they went looking for him. Ultimately, though, the way they fumbled repeatedly on the mystery made this probably my least favorite. The stains on their relationship further complicated and made this book disappointing. I ultimately enjoyed it as part of the greater series but wonder if I would have given it 3.5 stars without the history and attachment to the characters. Probably not.

The narration continues to be a real treat though and I'm loving listening to the theatrical performance from Kyf Brewer (male voices) and Orlagh Cassidy (female voices).
