Love this series so far!!! She is completely relatable, love the humor, the oh so real day to day uncertainty and anguish that happens whether you're an elderly care nurse, or a nurse on Y4, or oh, yeah, a human! Love the relationship with Ti and Asher, and all the characters make me want to get to know them more. This is an excellent series. Already read the second one, can't wait to read more of Ms. Alexander's work.

Edie Spence is not your typical night nurse. Now don't get me wrong. She still lives the life working the late shifts, coming home to an empty cold apartment, eating whatever is easy on the go, going to dance clubs on days off just to feel normal and hooking up with one night stands but her patients are not your typical. This is where the weird enters. She works on a secretive floor of the hospital with were creatures, vampires, day walkers, zombies, and yes dragons. There is also a mysterious entity that runs this floor from a dimension in between. When her brother got into trouble with his addiction Edie was approached with a proposal. These entities will help with her brother if she came and worked with them. Things will never be "normal" again.
While you read this story it is very clear how lonely working the night shift can actually be for some. You feel like you are disconnected from the world you work in. The only connections you really make are the coworkers you have the joy to work side by side with and the patients under your care. Edie is no different.
The paranormal beings in this series are well portrayed. The vampires are cruel, disconnected, power driven and well organize within their own ranks. The were creatures are diverse within their own kind (werewolves and weredogs) and the zombie is mysterious with his own gross factors and history. Then you have the mysterious entities, dragon, shapeshifters and even a ghost,
If you are going into this story thinking its going to be your typical girl gets mixed into trouble, girl meets boy and falls in love and they work together to get girl out of trouble type you will be disappointed. This is a darker fantasy like no other I have read before and I am jumping right into book two as I finish writing this review.

I wanted to love this book but the idea wasn't well executed. I listened to the audio book and although I loved this author's writing style it was a little all over the place. It was hard to follow along at times with all the different characters and their different mythical backgrounds. While I related to the character at times her personality felt flat.
It was kind of refreshing to read an UF book that did not have kick-butt heroine (though she did kick butt a little, it was not her sole life's purpose). I was squicked by the fact that she's dating a zombie whose parts are healing/falling off and especially when they had sex; I think I threw up in my mouth a little. I'm more used to unemotional/terrifying zombies that want to eat you than ones that want to share their experiences and sleep with you. And yes, he does have to eat the long pig. Ugh. But that was the only detracting point of the book and it was a brief part of the book though Ti, the zombie, is in most of the book and probably the sequel (and he does seem like a nice guy. But. Ugh.).

Anita Blake would be happy with Edie Spence, or would she? Maybe, who knows. Edie Spence is a nurse for a mysterious floor called Y4 at County. Where she takes care of vampires, werewolves, and Zombies. Oh my! Instead of having a crucifix that lights up for having faith, her employee badge has some kind of enchantments on it where it has a glow as it makes her a non-combative. This book reminded me a bit of the Anita Blake series, instead of an animator, she is a nurse. Highly enjoyable, and looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
Started out great for me - I was expecting another boring first-person POV female supernatural asskicker book, where the protagonist is always "Look at me, I'm in leather, I'm badass, and my hair looks great and therefore this book is awesome even though it's trite and all the humor is lame." Nightshifted wasn't that, and I liked the idea of a nurse in a secret paranormal hospital ward, a woman with grit but vulnerabilities. But then I got bored and stopped really believing in any of the plot or characters. I finished it though - a nice diversion, like watching a B horror movie on Syfy.

Oh wow. Where do I begin? So much went on in this book at so quick a pace, I just breezed through it. It only took me a couple days because I had needed sleep. This book has vampires, shapeshifters, were-creatures, zombies, and yes, that is a dragon on the cover. I guess the best thing about this novel was how well it was all thrown together. The author really has a vivid imagination, and the story that she told, featuring all sorts of characters, was written in a way that kept me on my toes, wanting more. Ms. Alexander was very good at keeping up the suspense!
The heroine, Edie Spence, was also very likeable. She was down-to-earth, had an awesome job as a nurse for paranormal beings, and really cared about other people, even if they weren't human. I will admit that having the main character fall for a zombie kind of weirded me out, but he was kind of endearing. I guess I'm just used to zombies from horror movies, rather than the Haitian ones they are based on. Still, the thought that sometimes his body parts came from other sources was a bit much.
I also admit that it was a bit daunting in the beginning, because the first few pages are filled with a lot of technical words and medical terminology I'd never heard of, so I was worried that the whole book was going to be like that, but luckily that was not the case. I was glad, because I thought that would have kept me from getting into it. Instead, this book really sucked me in, and it was rather hard to put down. I am very much looking forward to the sequel, Moonshifted, which will be coming out in November. Especially since the end of Nightshifted featured a teaser for the next book, and what I read of it ended on a suspenseful note. I really want to read more! I give it 4/5 stars.

This was my first book from Cassie Alexander and I really enjoyed it. It was fun to read about a human working as a nurse in the paranormal division of a hospital that not everyone knows about. Because I am not a nurse, some discussions or descriptions went a little over my head but I think that anyone who has knowledge of the profession would enjoy this aspect. Edie was such an interesting character. Even though she works the night shift she doesn’t let this affect her personal like and is willing to put herself out in the dating world which introduces her to some interesting characters (one I hope to see in the next book!). But it’s what happens on shift that drives the story. For being only a human in a world where everyone has more power and strength than she does, Edie fights for what’s right and tries to save those that others may consider unsaveable. She lands herself in hot water but fights to save herself and stand up for what’s right. For me, great first read from Ms. Alexander and I’m excited for more to come in the series!
