This officially marks where in the Alex Rider series I stopped reading as a kid, so all of the books from here on out I'm reading for the first time. I feel like how much I enjoy the book really depends on what's going on with the villain - I feel like stopping a bomb is such a generic spy plotline.
Reread. Again weirdly interesting politics and incredibly gruesome deaths !!! Give. This. Boy. A. Gun.
I am officially addicted to this series, really enjoying Oliver Chris's narration, and I think this is a bit of a step up from books 2 & 3 so I'm really looking forward to continuing on. Alex is a great proactive protagonist, driving the plot with his brave attempts to save the day but continuously finding himself in scary dire straits, and I think in this book we're beginning to get a little more depth to his feelings about his life, family and so on. The bad guys have so far basically been more or less one-dimensional cackling villains but in this the main villain is at least given a smidge more back story & motivation than in the previous two books, and Oliver Chris's performance of both him and his sidekick is entertaining.

This one is scary how many people try to kill Alex in the first few chapters!

I didn’t find this one as exciting as the first two books in the series BUT it starts to include more character development. I liked how it went into the impact all the violence has on Alex as well as the impact of the death of his parents, being raised by his uncle, then his uncle’s death. Not much actual undercover work (he was discovered pretty quick) and the gadgets weren’t as exciting. I liked the beginning with the Wimbledon, surfing, and skateboarding action before he even left on his mission!
