This novella is so incredibly beautifully written. I definitely now understand why so many people love this author. It definitely seems like the sort of thing to read during Winter. It is absolutely heartbreaking, though. I was not prepared for the emotional rollercoaster, but I just felt the tragic sense of this story all the way through. Essentially, this is just a tiny book of sadness. So if you want to cry, then read this!
I think the saddest and most heartbreaking elements for me came from the fact that the narrator is so alone. Loneliness is a horrible feeling and this style really manages to capture a story that is all about being alone and feeling abandoned. It’s crushing and painful and perfectly made. I’d probably give it a higher rating if the story was a bit longer, and if there were less creepy elements in it, but overall I really enjoyed this, despite the emotional devastation. I’d recommend reading this if you want to feel sad but don’t if you’re trying to improve your mental health.

I want to come back to this book at some point when I’m feeling less romantically unfortunate. I think I’d appreciate it more then. The prose was beautiful but it didn’t really hit for me this time.
